Learning the kick serve in tennis is one of the more difficult tasks you can undertake. The reason is that it takes a lot of time to master this skill.
First of all you must have already established:
- the correct grip
- the swing and technique for the basic serve
- you must be strong enough physically in the wrists and forearm
- you must decide if you need to add the kick serve to your game
- are you patient enough to spend the time to develop this skill
- and is the effort to work on the kick serve worth it for you
If you still want to learn the kick serve then the following tips will help you:
- The ball toss needs to be placed more to the left (right-handed player) allowing the player to brush up on the ball.
- Start a kick serve with the racquet already up and behind the head. This teaches you the first movement of brushing up on the ball.
- Exaggerate the net clearance, this teaches you how the ball drops with the spin.
- After 10 – 12 repetitions with this abbreviated swing, move on to serving with the full swing motion.
- Repetition! Repetition! Repetition! Repetition…….
