The Art Of The Kick Serve

by admin on July 7, 2009

Learning the kick serve in tennis is one of the more difficult tasks you can undertake. The reason is that it takes a lot of time to master this skill.

First of all you must have already established:

  1. the correct grip
  2. the swing and technique for the basic serve
  3. you must be strong enough physically in the wrists and forearm
  4. you must decide if you need to add the kick serve to your game
  5. are you patient enough to spend the time to develop this skill
  6. and  is the  effort to work on the kick serve worth it for you

If you still want to learn the kick serve then the following tips will help you:

  1. The ball toss needs to be placed more to the left (right-handed player) allowing the player to brush up on the ball.
  2. Start a kick serve with the racquet already up and behind the head. This teaches you the first movement of brushing up on the ball.
  3. Exaggerate the net clearance, this teaches you how the ball drops with the spin.
  4. After 10 – 12 repetitions with this abbreviated swing, move on to serving with the full swing motion.
  5. Repetition! Repetition! Repetition! Repetition…….
