Maria Sharapova’s latest attempt to land her first French Open title ended with a 6-0, 6-2 defeat by Dominika Cibulkova. A rusty Sharapova lost the first 11 games and averted a shut-out only after facing match point.

The Russian was playing in only her second tournament after a lay-off of nearly 10 months because of a right shoulder injury whereas Cibulkova looked in the form of her life as she reached her first major semi-final.

The 20-year-old Slovak, seeded 20th, will now play the top-ranked Dinara Safina, who rallied to beat Victoria Azarenka 1-6, 6-4, 6-2.
