Beating The Player That Runs Down Everything

by admin on July 12, 2009

Have you ever hit a great shot, only to have your opponent run it down. The opponent that has a set of great wheels can be a real pain to play. In a sport like tennis, foot speed is as much a weapon as a big serve. You need a strategy.

Here are some things to try:

Pick on the weaker side:

Generally there’s going to be a stroke which is weaker. Make sure you focus on hitting balls to this weak side. Make him beat you with his “B” game.

If he likes to run don’t run him:

Hitting on the run can cover up poor stroke technique because the player is  concentrating on running  the ball down.  When someone has poor technique there’s a good chance he’ll make a mistake when he has time to think about the shot.

There is more than one way to yo-yo a player:

When you are moving your opponent from side to side along the baseline, try hitting behind him. If you hit a good forehand down the line to the backhand corner, aim your next shot back into that same part of the court.  He will be moving back toward to the center, it will be difficult for him to  change directions quickly.
